High Wycombe residents are being offered the opportunity of free training, through the Neighbourhood Watch Network, that will allow them to spot the signs of potential scams and protect vulnerable members of their community.

It is estimated up to £10 billion is lost each year to fraudulent activity, but with simple precautions, this figure can be dramatically reduced.

Clare Clarke, Community Engagement Manager for the Neighbourhood Watch Network, said: “Fraud is an awful crime but for older people, it can be especially devastating. As well as robbing victims of money, fraudsters take away their confidence, dignity and independence.”

“These sessions will help to highlight the scale of the problem. Volunteers can learn about the types of scams, how to spot and support somebody affected by fraud. With increased knowledge and awareness, volunteers can make a huge difference to fraud prevention their community. With millions of people targeted by scams each year, we need to be doing all we can to keep our older generations as secure as possible.”

Two sessions have been organised for the Wednesday 10 April, morning and afternoon, and those that attend can volunteer and share their new skills and knowledge with others in their communities. The Neighbourhood Watch Network will also provide ongoing support and resources to project volunteers.

The volunteer training workshops will take place on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at Adams Park, Wycombe Wanderers Stadium, Hillbottom Road, High Wycombe, HP12 4HJ. The morning session is 10am – 12:30pm and the afternoon session is 1pm – 3:30pm.

Both sessions include refreshments and a resource pack, and speakers will include the National Trading Standards Scams Team, NatWest Community Banker, a current volunteer and the Neighbourhood Watch Network.
