Getting started

Think about why you want to organise this event and what you want to achieve, such as recruiting new members. Another thing to think about is location. This could be a local community hall, café, a local park or even your home.

  • Consider who you are hoping to invite, as this will influence the location
  • Think about inviting other local Neighbouhood Watch groups to join in too, as well as police and local councillors.

Set a date and time

It's best to give guests about 3-4 weeks notice. Weekends or weekday afternoons work best, avoid school pick-up times and major events. It shouldn't be more than 1.5–2 hours.

Invite guests

Neighbours (obviously) through door-knocking, leaflets, posters, NW membership emails, WhatsApp, or local groups.  You can also invite local Police and Councillors via police or council websites. Let them know:

  • What Communi-Tea is
  • Date, time, location
  • Approximate attendance
  • Highlight the chance to meet residents and discuss community safety

Plan refreshments

Keep it simple, Tea, coffee, squash, water with biscuits or cakes are great, you don't need to make it fancy. Remember to label all food, which is essential for people with dietary requirements, food intolerance and allergies. Bring cups, napkins, and bin bags if not using the venue’s own supply.

Keep everyone safe

It is good practice to complete a risk assessment form prior to an event and remember to take precautions to ensure that people stay safe. Possible risks include: allergies and unlabelled food, hot water or surfaces, especially if you are using a kettle or urn and accidents due to spillages.
