Fightback against fraud with free scam training

22/03/2019

Buckinghamshire residents are being offered the opportunity to volunteer and gain free training through Neighbourhood Watch to help them spot the signs of potential scams. They can then use the skills they have learned to help older members of their community to protect themselves against fraud.

It is estimated over £193 billion is lost each year to fraudulent activity, but with simple precautions this figure can be dramatically reduced.

Clare Clarke, Community Engagement Manager for the Neighbourhood Watch Network, said: “Fraud is an awful crime but for older people it can be especially devastating. As well as robbing victims of money, fraudsters can take away their confidence, dignity and independence.”

“These sessions will help to highlight the scale of the problem. Volunteers will learn about the types of scams, how to spot and support somebody affected by fraud. With increased knowledge and awareness, volunteers can make a huge difference to fraud prevention their community.

“Millions of people are targeted by scammers each year. We need to be doing all we can to fightback against those who target older members of our community.”

Two sessions are planned for 22 March to train those volunteers who attend to share their new skills and knowledge with others in their communities. The Neighbourhood Watch Network will also provide ongoing support and resources to volunteers.

The training workshops will take place on Friday 22 March 2019 at the Gateway Centre, Gateway Road, Aylesbury, HP19 8FF.

The morning session is 10am – 12:30pm and the afternoon session is 1pm – 3:30pm.

Volunteers should only sign up to one of the sessions.

Both sessions include refreshments and a resource pack and speakers will include the National Trading Standards Scams Team, a NatWest Community Banker, a current volunteer and the Neighbourhood Watch Network.
