Title
Community Allotment

Describe your best practice
We have secured an allotment which we are opening up to everyone as a community and garden project.

What did you do and why?
We emailed our local authority to see if there were any vacant plots and were told we could view the three available. We picked a plot, secured it and we have done two open sessions for residents to come and view it. We wanted to extend our previous project of ‘Meadow Road in Bloom’ that we have done engaging our residents of all ages to come together and grown plants, flowers and vegetables .

Duration of the project
Began July 2019 and will be ongoing

What worked well?
We had so much interest and support from our residents and it clearly is becoming a very engaging project that offers something to all ages and all abilities. It serves to prevent social isolation and engages all ages and demographics.

How did you overcome any challenges?
Obtaining funding has been the greatest challenge aside from the obvious physical effort needed to clear the plot.

We are working to secure funding for a shed to secure gardening equipment etc

How did you cover any costs?
Fundraising and applications into local funding streams.
