Ramya Perera from Patcham, near Brighton in Sussex, remembers very clearly the day a door-to-door salesman selling kitchen towels and the like became abusive towards her when she told him she wasn’t interested in buying his wares. In fact, she was forced to push him out of her front door.
Ramya’s unpleasant experience will be featured in Gloria Hunniford’s new BBC 1 programme “Doorstep Crime 999” which will be aired on Tuesday 28 February.
Several months after her experience, Ramya joined her local Neighbourhood Watch scheme, where she wished to be part of a local community which was friendly and which worked towards helping each other create a safe environment. She has since become an active member of a successful Neighbourhood Watch scheme with support from Sussex Police, and especially local PCSO Gareth Rossi.
Patcham Neighbourhood Watch was first established in the late 1980s, and continues to enjoy an active network of volunteers who work to reduce crime in the area and maintain a sense of security among the residents of Patcham
